		<description>

Hamed Dehqan (°1990, IR)Between Tehran and Brussels

My practice moves across drawing and painting, installation, objects, spatial scenarios, and poetry. In my works, an unknown, enigmatic, and colorful world exists alongside strange characters that often emerge from simple, primordial shapes. These environments and figures become a way for me to explore the fragile, shifting relationship between imagination and reality.

I put a bunch of tricks up my sleeve
But don’t put this stuff at home
Put your gaze upon it...
Do you put yourself to seek it?
I put a love for stage magic!
Then where is its thrill put?
Where does its art put?

put it easy, put it easy!Let's go put a hot chocolate milk together and chill a bit!
It wasn't too bad!
Who’s put a curse on you?
We're crazy.

You really want a friend
I will be your friend
We're two loaves of bread in a toaster!
Put it easy!

❥---

Who cursed you?

Last night I dreamed we were skipping past the lake, and a bunny was hopping on top of the water!

Oh, did you hear? The aliens are finally coming!

Can you pull that little metal piece out of the wall?

We could do all sorts of weird and wacky stuff with it.

Ever since I landed in that land, I thought I was lost.

You know what? There, you’re supposed to drink hot chocolate all the time and just chill!

It was so silly, the carriages were all lined up… was that Flarnadoo?

When the light was red I didn’t see a thing, but when it turned green, that alien was following me nonstop!

I cried a lot yesterday because I realized my friends weren’t around!

In that land, crows have giant feet!

Are you my friend?!

There’s always a cursed land you haven’t been to yet.

When you see another alien, you can ask why it’s so scared and why its mouth is wide open!

Let’s just forget about all this for a little while.

We’re like two slices of bread in one toaster.

Stay calm.

When they come, the colored pencils on the table start gossiping about them.

‘Cause they’re friends with the colored pencils.

Then… we have to repaint everything from the beginning.

We gotta stay right here, but maybe we can take another path too.

We can be two slices of bread in a toaster.

The bunnies are hopping on the water.

Do you think we should come here every day and just watch this view?

It looks super magical.

Can I trust those aliens?

Stay here, I’m gonna go play with the crows.

So… you love crows?

Nah, their feet are just huge!

Wanna go for a walk by the road afterward?

There’s a hot chocolate spring over there.

We can drink hot chocolate together!

For this work, hamed produced a series of abstract paintings installed in a space inside a space. This scenography disrupts what’s inside and out, as it forces the viewer and organizes a sequential gaze and multiple ways of seeing the artworks. Hamed Dehqan considers this dynamic perception as a fantasy animation where visitors follow a path inspired by Alice in wonderland, albeit in a modernist ‘miseen-abyme’ white cube. Similarly, his meta-theatrical performances play with cartoon animations references from the 1970s and 1980s associated with the two-dimensional spaces composed in abstract painting in the same period while bringing them into the contemporary context. These multiple references stemming from various cultural origins invite the audience to take part in his fantasy space.

‘built in the midst’ explores similarities, repetition, and differences in a magical constellation of references. The elements of the installation function as sculptures, feelings, or contexts, according to the phys-ical position of the observer. The visitor is therefore guided into the chapel in a constantly renovated discovery of various levels of visibility, seeing distinct compositions in relation to where they are standing.

This exhibition presents the transition from Hamed Dehqan’s former practice based in Iran to the development of his projects as an artist in residence at HISK. His previous site-specific installations took shape within these spaces with found objects that unfolded the collective life experience among plants and their behaviour as a form of (comparative study in) discovering the social human life. Plants and objects in those installations were used in a figurative manner and were the main subject of his study.

For this project he keeps exploring relative materials, colours, textures and shapes through objects in his installations. In his previous works he was an observer of his surroundings with a contemporary language defying to accept the classical form of painting and sculpture.

“If moving forward meant creating a bigger scale installation, I take a step back, to transform a three dimensional image into two dimen-sional colour, form, and texture.”

I went to the Garden of Love,

And saw what I never had seen:

A Chapel was built in the midst,

Where I used to play on the green.

And the gates of this Chapel were shut,

And ‘Thou shalt not’ writ over the door;

So I turn’d to the Garden of Love,

That so many sweet flowers bore.

And I saw it was filled with graves,

And tomb-stones where flowers should be:

And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds, And binding with briars, my joys &#38;amp; desires.

The Garden of Love
